Like the sunflower, marigold and aster, the dahlia belongs to the daisy family or aster family. It has fleshy, underground tubers that resemble the potato. The flower heads are large and very different in shape and color. Their flowering time ranges from June to the onset of frost in the winter. A Spanish doctor named Francisco Hernandez reported in 1575 about this plant. It was probably he who brought the dahlia from its area of origin in Mexico to Europe. Today there are about 20,000 different varieties of dahlia. In Germany, the tubers are planted between the end of April and the beginning of May at a depth of about 15 centimeters. The dahlias prefer a sunny location. In autumn, the tuber roots should be removed from the soil and stored dry to protect them from frost.
