The sun hat - named after the Swedish botanist Olaus Rudbeck also »rudbeckia« - beautifies many gardens with its usually intense yellow flowers. Popularly, this plant species is also referred to by other names such as "Sonnaster", "Soldier's Flower", "False Sunflower" or "Goldflower". There are about 30 different species. The sizes of perennials vary from 30 centimeters up to two meters in height. There are annual and perennial species. The original home of the sun hat is North America. There it was used by the Indians centuries ago as a medicinal plant for cough, sore throat and tonsillitis. The genus »Echinacea« is today the active ingredient of many known medicines.
