On October 20, 1880, the Opera House on Bockenheimer Landstraße, designed according to plans by Richard Lucae, was inaugurated. On a floor area of 4,000 square meters, a 34-meter-high building was created whose architecture in the Renaissance style was reminiscent of designs by Gottfried Semper. On the night of March 23, 1944, the opera burned down to the foundations and parts of the roof construction. »Germany's most beautiful ruin« was rebuilt in 1976 and reopened on 28 August 1981. Today, the Alte Oper Frankfurt hosts concerts ranging from classical to rock and pop as well as cabaret and ballet events. For this purpose, the mahogany-lined »Great Hall« is particularly suitable for its excellent acoustics. In addition, the Alte Oper is a prestigious congress center.
