The history of the village Tönning - about 60 kilometers south of the German-Danish border - is characterized by its location at the mouth of the Eider in the North Sea. In earlier centuries, the Eider was an important waterway between the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The already mentioned in 1187 Tönning received 1575 market rights and 1590 the city law. 1613, the artificially constructed port was put into operation. The Tönninger Packhouse, which was located at the harbor, was completed in 1783. The building, built on stilts, served as a storage and transshipment point for maritime trade. With the opening of the Eider Canal in 1784, the packhouse gained in importance. Up to 2,250 ships passed the place annually. Thus trade relations developed to England, France and Holland. Today, the warehouse in Tönningen is the only one of its kind still to be admired in its original state.
