The Berlin Philharmonic was opened on 15 October 1963 with a concert by the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. It replaced the old philharmonic orchestra destroyed in an air raid in 1944 and is the headquarters of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The building near Potsdamer Platz was built according to plans by Hans Scharoun. The external shape is determined by the pagoda-like hall building, which can be seen from afar, and its tent-like roof. The audience room is arranged in a circle around the musician's podium. The podium-sloping spectator stands became the model for many later resulting concert buildings. Today, around 270 concerts take place each year in the 2,440-strong »Großer Saal«. In addition, there are more than 240 events in the Chamber Music Hall, which opened in 1987, with 1,180 seats. It is used for chamber concerts and orchestral concerts with a small cast.
