An important aim of the »Bauhaus« art direction was to design everyday objects and buildings that combine optimal practical use with artistic design. To implement this approach, the Bauhaus School was officially founded on April 1, 1919 in Weimar. At this location, however, she ceased her work on 1 April 1925 and moved to Dessau. The new Bauhaus building designed by Walter Gropius was inaugurated on 4 December 1926 in Dessau. It consists of three wings, the workshop wing with a glass curtain wall, the studio house and the technical schools. A two-storey bridge housing the administration and construction office of Gropius connects the school wing and the workshops. In the flat intermediate building, the auditorium, the stage and the canteen are housed today. The Bauhaus building has a clearly structured structure without unnecessary ornamentation. Many parts of the interior design were designed by teachers of the school and in their own workshops. Since 1996, the Bauhaus building with the master houses and the Bauhaus in Weimar has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
