The new stamp series »Flowers« begins in Germany with the postage stamp »Sunflower«. It will replace the permanent series »Women of German History« and »Sightseeing« step by step. However, postage stamps of these two series still retain their validity. There are around 120 varieties of sunflower, some with multicolored petals. The original home of the sunflower is the American continent. In 1569, the first sunflower seeds were said to have been brought to Spain. The sunflower has become a popular ornamental plant in many parts of Europe. Sunflower oil was first harvested on a large scale in 1830 in Russia. Today, the sunflower is the fourth most important oil plant in the world after oil palm, soybean and rapeseed. The "Sunflower" brand has a nominal value of 95 cents and thus covers the new postage level for a compact letter in national or European shipping.
