A new series of permanent rolling press with depictions of German castles and palaces replaces the roller-type brand series "Accident Prevention". The postage stamps of 40 and 190 Pfennig appearing as additional values in this series with the inscription Deutsche Bundespost are published at the same time and in the same motif as the inscription Deutsche Bundespost Berlin; the first two values were issued on January 13, 1977. The castle Eltz, one of the best preserved and most atmospheric German castles, lies on a steep, surrounded by dense forests rock high above a tributary of the lower Moselle. With the winding arrangement of its buildings, the many turrets, bay windows and steep roofs, it brings the Middle Ages to life. »Wonderfully accommodating through the loneliness and beauty of the situation of the imagination - so Burg Eltz is for the immediate impression, the castle 'par excellence' (Georg Dehio). Here, Eltz is more residential than Wehrburg. Its construction began in the middle of the 12th century. The Lords of Eltz are first mentioned around 1157, and even today the castle is owned by the counts of and to Eltz. In the course of the Middle Ages, the sex split into several branches of the family, which, however, kept the castle as a joint possession (alliance) and extended it. Through the resulting juxtaposition of tall buildings of different architectural styles, the castle received its impressive pictorial form. The oldest of the houses, Haus Platteltz, is a mighty residential tower dating back to Roman times. In 1472 Haus Rübenach, a late Gothic residential tower, was completed. This building remained undamaged in a fire in 1920 that caused great damage. 1470 - 1540 the house was built Gross-Rodendorf As other parts of the plant are the chapel, the houses Klein-Rodendorf, large and small Kempenich, Burgthorn and the Remisenbau worth mentioning. In the Eltzer feud 1331-1336, the Archbishop of Trier, Balduin of Luxembourg, erected the castle Trutz-Eltz in order to subjugate the lords of Eltz to their castle (today remains of rubble). Several of the stone balls hurled from there can still be seen on Eltz. (Text: excerpts from the texts of the German Castle Association e.V. Braubach - Dr. W. Avenarius)
