The occasion of the Pope's visit on 10 September 1983 was the Austrian Catholic Day. Pope John Paul had already declared publicly on June 6: "I come to the Catholic Day". When he landed in Vienna / Schwechat, 201 years had passed since the last time a Pope, Pius VI, visited Vienna and Austria. Three big events, a European Vesper on the Heldenplatz, the meeting with the Austrian youth in the stadium as well as a big festive service were on the program of this event of the century. The clear highlight of the four-day Pope's visit was the festive service, which Pope John Paul II celebrated on Sunday, September 11, on the grounds of the Vienna Danube Park with 30 cardinals, bishops and priests. It was also the end of the Catholic Day in 1983. According to estimates, around 500,000 people were gathered to attend this Pope's Mass. Pope John Paul II, the first Pole in this role, visited in the course of his stay, among others, the Federal President, the United Nations City and the Diplomatic Corps. The papal visit ended on Tuesday, September 13, 1983.
