White and red Saar are called the two source rivers of the total 246 kilometers long Saar, both of which originate at the Donon in the Vosges and unite at Lorchingen. The Saar flows through East Lorraine, before it is from Saargemünd until shortly before Saarbrücken border river between France and Germany. From the "Cloef" (Low German for "cliff", "elevated vantage point"), located 130 meters above the valley floor, offers the viewer a unique view of the embedded between mountains and forests Saar with its most curious meander, the Saar loop. It flows around a ridge three kilometers long, sometimes only a few hundred meters wide, before making a U-turn back to the southeast at the top of the mountain tongue. At this point, the hard quartzite rocks of the Hunsrück foothills face the river on its way north and cause this graceful nature. The special stamp series "Images from Germany" is intended to give the viewer a relaxed overview of the beauty and diversity of Germany through striking examples from the various regions of the country.
