The North German moor landscape with its extensive marshes, which were hardly accessible for centuries, characterize the land between the lower reaches of the Elbe and Weser. Their emergence is due to the effects of the last ice age and a humid maritime climate. A supraregional celebrity attained the Teufelsmoor. Today, these bogs are largely drained and fed to agricultural use. Still existing low and high moor areas have been protected for several years. Even today, the canals, the birch-lined dams and the cottages and farms of the moor peasants are characteristic of a picturesque landscape.
