Like a lifeline, the Main traverses the holiday region of Franconia in east-west direction, past Coburg, Bamberg and Schweinfurt to Würzburg and finally Wertheim, the former residence of the Counts of Wertheim, where the Tauber flows into the Main. With its ancient lanes, half-timbered houses and the imposing castle ruin, Wertheim has retained the character of an old-Franconian town. Next, the Main flows upstream to Aschaffenburg, where he crosses the borders to Hesse. Since the completion of the Main-Danube Canal, the Main has enjoyed an economically and, above all, touristically even more important role than ever before. It is now part of the waterway to the culture and history of a heartland of Europe. (Text: Tourism Association Franconia e.V., Nuremberg)
