In the middle of Germany, in the border region of Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia, lies the Rhön. Colorful meadows and meadows, shady forests and bizarre raised bogs dominate the face of the Rhön countryside, which was awarded the title of "Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO" in 1991 due to its rich flora and fauna. Mighty primeval forces and glowing lava once formed the volcanically dominated low mountain range. Idiosyncratic basalt columns, mighty boulders and phonolite rocks still bear witness to it today. Highest elevation with 950 m is the Wasserkuppe. Here lies the birthplace of German gliding, and so this mountain has carried the name of the Rhön far beyond its borders. More than 5,000 km of marked hiking trails run through the »Land of open distances«, where hikers can let their gaze wander over the almost treeless plateaus far down into the valleys with the typical Rhön villages. Customs and culture are cultivated there, and so much is still alive in the Rhön, which one will look for in vain elsewhere. (Text: Tourism Association Rhön e.V., Fulda)
