Görlitz is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The historic old town has survived the wars of the past century unscathed and gathered on about 40 hectares more than 3,600 monuments. In the Middle Ages, the Via Regia - a major trade route that connected today's Belarusian Kiev with the Spanish Santiago de Compostela - through Görlitz. In addition to wholesale and long-distance trade, cloth making and brewing were among the main sources of income. After a city fire in 1525, Renaissance buildings were built. Worthy of mention are the large and lavishly decorated trading yards of wealthy merchants who were responsible for the storage of goods, goods handling, representation and living. After further city fires of 1717 and 1726, new buildings were built in Baroque style.
