In the fast-growing city of Munich at the beginning of the 19th century, the existing farmer's market for grain and other agricultural products, today's Marienplatz, had become too small. Therefore, the Bavarian King Maximilian I ordered on May 2, 1807, the construction of a new retail space between the Holy Spirit Church and Frauenstraße. From 1823 to 1829, the market was expanded by fruit-selling pavilions, a fish-selling hall and other buildings. Destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt afterwards with great effort. The 22,000 square meter Viktualienmarkt has become a shopping destination for gourmets. His beer garden is known for traditional events such as Maypole's May Day.
