With VALIE EXPORT, an important Austrian media and performance artist, the highly regarded brand series "Fotokunst Österreich" is now being continued. The brand image shows one of VALIE EXPORT's first known art objects - a "Smart Export" cigarette pack, which she transformed into her trademark. VALIE EXPORT, born in Linz in 1940, grew up with two sisters as the daughter of a war widow. From 1955 to 1958 she attended the School of Applied Arts in Linz, from 1960 to 1964 the Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for the Textile Industry in Vienna. In 1967 she adopted her stage name VALIE EXPORT as an artistic concept and logo, with the requirement to write it only in uppercase. This action wants to know it as a feminist critique of patriarchal-capitalist attribution practices - before a proper name covers the individual feed into the market, he would better be replaced by a logo, so the convinced view of the artist. In 1977 she participated in the documenta 6 in Kassel, in 1980 she represented Austria together with Maria Lassnig at the Venice Biennale. In 1985, her feature film "The Practice of Love" was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in the category of books and directing. From 1989 to 1992 she was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1991-1995 professor in the Department of Visual Communication at the College of Arts in Berlin. From 1995 to 2005, VALIE EXPORT held a professorship for multimedia performance at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. In 2007 she was represented at both the Venice Biennale and documenta 12. VALIE EXPORT's artistic work, which has won numerous prestigious awards, includes video environments, digital photography, installations, body performances, game, experimental and documentary films, expanded cinema, conceptual photography, body-material interactions, laser installations, objects , Sculptures and texts on contemporary art and feminism. "Art can be a medium of self-determination, and it brings new value to art," claims VALIE EXPORT to herself. One thing is for sure: the search for identity and expression runs through her entire work, constantly repeating the pain of speechlessness and the loss of physical and mental integrity. Of course, the artist became known to a broad public as early as 1968 - with her sensational "tap and touch cinema". In this action, she carried a box over her bare torso and passers-by in the street were allowed to grab her breasts.
