The painter Gustav Klimt was born on July 14, 1862, the son of a gold engraver. He was one of the founding members of the Secession and was its first president from 1897 to 1899. At the beginning of 1905, however, there were differences and the "Klimt Group" left the Secession. Klimt is the main representative of Viennese Art Nouveau. He had great influence not only on the Secession and the Vienna School of Applied Arts, but also on the Wiener Werkstätte. His art determined Austrian painting at the turn of the century. Klimt was an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Munich. One of his most famous paintings is "The Kiss", which was already shown in 1964 on a stamp. In his series "Judith and Holofernes" Klimt refers to an ancient story: The Jewish widow Judith saved her hometown in a siege by beguiling the commander Holofernes by their beauty. After she had drunk him, she cut off his head with his own sword. The painting hangs in the Austrian Gallery in the Belvedere. Gustav Klimt died on February 6, 1918 in Vienna and was buried in the Hietzinger cemetery.
