The baroque Stations of the Cross in Heiligenkreuz is one of the most beautiful crossroads in Austria. Old chestnut and linden trees line the path that begins to the east of the monastery and leads up to a small hill. Between the trees are small chapels with the pictures of the Stations of the Cross. Stone saints on the right and left of the path lead the faithful through the avenue. At the end rises the crucifixion chapel, from which a two-armed, curved staircase leads down to the road to Gaaden. The Way of the Cross was built under Abbot Robert Leeb (1728-1755). The sculptures along the way come from the workshop of the Baroque sculptor Giovanni Giuliani, who furnished the Cistercian abbey with numerous sculptures. Extensive renovations in the years 1990 to 1993 saved the Way of the Cross from impending decay. These stamps were reprinted in 2005 and immediately overprinted.
