Amnesty International is an internationally unique neutral association. It includes free citizens from currently about 20 countries, who support political prisoners in more than 60 countries. Unsupported are prisoners who have perpetrated or propagated violence. In the Federal Republic of Germany, about 400 Amnesty working groups are currently working for every 3 prisoners, one each from an Eastern, Western and Third World country. It expresses that Amnesty International is not working for or against an ideology, but for the political prisoner. The commitment is voluntary and is basically independent of any one-sided political statement. It is based solely on Articles 5, 9, 19 and 18 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 10 December 1948, whose worldwide enforcement and respect is the objective of Amnesty International's work. The international significance of this initiative of the German section becomes clear when one considers that this international association, originally founded in England, today receives its largest contributions from the Federal Republic of Germany. In this way practical contributions to peace are made here, which have already been supported on various occasions by donations from the Land governments because of their civic educational function. Amnesty International, as an association for respecting political rights, is not just a humanitarian, but a political organization. As such, however, it is neutral, d. H. free of any unilateral opinion. Amnesty International is working worldwide to continue the very foundation of democracy, freedom of expression and conscience, from mere proclamation to the level of practical realization. Amnesty International represents these human rights for political prisoners by expressly renouncing any violence to achieve political goals.
