From the birth of the operetta to the present day, one has never stopped talking about their crisis. Nevertheless, the Viennese operetta still brings the theaters full houses. Their tunes delight in radio, on records and on television even the youngest generation. 1970 is a year of great anniversaries in the field of operetta. The 90 year old master Robert Stolz composes and travels in indestructible freshness from country to country, while the 75 year old Nico Dostal has just completed a new musical comedy. And this year marks the 100th birthday of two great masters of the Silver Operetta Period, Franz Lehár and Oscar Straus. During a period of 65 years (from about 1865 to 1930) operetta was at the center of Vienna's cultural and social life. The enchanting magic of a monarchy already marked by death became an unprecedented intoxication of beauty in the great Viennese operetta. From Johann Strauss to Franz Lehár, from Millöcker to Kálmán, from Suppé to Oscar Straus, from Heuberger to Robert Stolz - the music of Viennese operetta has conquered the world. In Offenbach, what was Gallic wit and parody became a smiling and laughing, but basically serious sentiment. The operetta carried the splendor of Vienna around the world.
