The museum building by Daniel Libeskind is already a landmark of Berlin today as an architectural masterpiece. Already as an empty museum building, the building attracted 350,000 visitors. A Jewish museum already existed in Berlin in 1933, at that time on Oranienburger Strasse. This was closed in 1938 by the Gestapo and confiscated its holdings. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in November 1992, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in May 1995. The Jewish Museum Berlin today includes both the Libeskind building and the Baroque Kollegienhaus, which formerly housed the Berlin Museum. A permanent exhibition presents two millennia of German-Jewish history on 3,000 square meters.
