Since mid-September 2008, the Vienna Westbahnhof station has been rebuilt into the BahnhofCity Wien West, the first BahnhofCity in Austria, with ongoing operation and with particular regard to heritage protection. The redevelopment and redesign of the Westbahnhof railway station is an important milestone on the ÖBB station offensive, during which the most frequented train stations in Austria are being upgraded to state-of-the-art technical and architectural standards with maximum customer orientation. Already in 2002, the corresponding urban design competition "Vienna West" took place on an international level. The renowned Viennese team of architects "Neumann & Steiner ZT GmbH" unanimously came out victorious; its proposal was used as the basis for drawing up a structural plan, which subsequently laid the foundations for zoning and development plans. The construction measures included the general refurbishment of the landmarked station concourse and the construction of immediately adjacent buildings to the left and right, each with six levels. On the left, above the park corner Mariahilfer Straße / Neubaugürtel, an office building with an open atrium was built. On the right side of the existing concourse there was also a modern office complex in which a hotel was integrated. Under the resulting building complex, a new storey was added, which connects the outer Mariahilfer Straße directly to the railway station. On three levels of the BahnhofCity is the actual station hall including service facilities as well as a 17,000 m² shopping center with about 100 shops and a varied gastronomic offer. The BahnhofCity Wien West offers not only train drivers a higher quality of travel, the new station also takes on the role of local supplier for residents and visitors and thus becomes an open meeting place. Of course, the design of the sophisticated travel center was based on the most modern aspects: for example accessibility - lifts and escalators lead to all areas of the station, a complete video surveillance ensures the necessary security and an enlarged bright waiting area with more than 200 seats for contemporary comfort; The average frequency of the station is at least 43,000 people per day. Last but not least, the rebuilding and construction of the BahnhofCity Wien West is an important impetus for the further development of the immediately adjacent district, making the 15th district much more attractive due to its better living and quality of life.
