On October 14, 1888, the "Hof- und Nationaltheater", the former center of acting in Vienna, moved to the new Burgtheater am Ring. The builder of the new imperial palace was the court architect Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer. Heavy destruction hit the Burgtheater during the Second World War. In the very last days of the war, it received a heavy bombing hit in the located opposite the Löwelstraße backstage tract. On April 8, a heavy artillery hit caused further major damage, two days later, the spectator and the stage burned down completely. For the reconstruction 1948 a competition over the organization of the spectator house was advertised. From this competition Dr. Michael Engelhart emerged victorious and was entrusted with the redesign of the auditorium. The auditorium of the new house summed up after the reopening a total of 1520 people, 1200 seats and 320 standing places. In October 1955, the Burgtheater with Grillparzer's "King Ottokar's luck and end" was ushered in a new era. This opening was also the occasion of the issue of this special postage stamp.
