The Swedish chemist and industrialist Nobel (1833-1896) erected the Nobel Foundation in his will. Annually, on the anniversary of Nobel's death (December 10), the interest of around SEK 31 million will be distributed as the Nobel Prize for the five most important achievements in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peoples' peace regardless of the nationality of the award winner. The series honors the Nobel Prize winners of German literature Gerhart Hauptmann, Hermann Hesse and Thomas Mann. The poet Gerhart Hauptmann was born on 15.11.1862 in Ober-Salzbrunn / Silesia as the son of a host. After the secondary school in Wroclaw and a time as an agricultural elite, he joined in 1880 in the sculptural class of the Art School Wroclaw. After a short study of philosophy, science and history u. a. Captain von Eucken and Haecker and a sea voyage in the western Mediterranean in 1884 made Hauptmann a sculptor in Rome. Because of typhus, he soon returns to Germany, completes a character class in Dresden, studied two semesters of history in Berlin and takes acting lessons alongside. Hauptmann lives alternately in Berlin, Dresden, Italy, Hiddensee and Schreiberhau. Since 1901 his main residence is "Haus Wiesenstein" in Agnetendorf, where he died on June 6, 1946. He is buried in Kloster / Hiddensee. In 1912 he received the Nobel Prize. Hauptmann is one of the most important dramatists in German literature.
