For the New Year's Concert 2004 a special stamp for the conductor Riccardo Muti will be released. Riccardo Muti was born on July 28, 1941 in Naples. He studied composition with Jacopo Napoli and Nino Rota in Naples and conducting with Antonino Votto in Milan and with Franco Ferrara in Venice (1965). After Muti won the Guido Cantelli Competition in 1967, he debuted in 1968 as a conductor with the RAI Orchestra. Soon afterwards, in 1970, the Teatro Communale in Florence appointed him Principal Conductor of the orchestra. From 1968 to 1980 Muti held the management of the prestigious Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. After special successes with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in London in 1972 Muti was appointed Principal Conductor of the orchestra. For ten years until 1982, the conductor remained firmly attached to this orchestra. From 1980 to 1992 he also directed the orchestra in Philadelphia (USA). In Milan Muti was transferred in 1986 to the position of music director of the Teatro alla Scala, since 1987 he is also chief conductor of the Scala Orchestra there. Riccardo Muti is a regular guest in Vienna, Salzburg and London and brings out repeatedly celebrated performances. Muti is considered one of the most outstanding conductors of our time, both for Italian opera and for classical and contemporary symphonic music.
