The Nussberg is a landmark in Vienna's urban landscape both in terms of its geological development and its role in history. For geology, the Nussberg has significance in connection with the genesis of the Vienna Basin, but much more important for the consciousness of the Viennese is its cultural history. At the foot of the Nussberg is the small village Nussdorf, where Celts and Romans settled. The far-reaching history of the place results from its direct location on the Danube, which made possible shipping and fishing, but even more from viticulture. During the 2nd Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, the Nussberg played an essential role. On 12 September 1683, still in the dark, the imperial troops began the descent on the southwest side of the Nussberg, and on the Nussberg itself, the first skirmishes with the Turks were made. In the later morning Nussdorf and Heiligenstadt were freed. But back to viticulture. The wine produced here, the "Nussberger", is legendary. No wonder that his goodness is also praised in songs. In numerous wine taverns - the famous "Heurigen" - at the foot of the Nussberg, locals and visitors to Vienna can taste the "Nussberger". The stamp shows a landscape of the Nussberg and the Leopoldsberg.
