The Lurgrotte between Semriach and Peggau, a coherent cave system, is as it were the center of one of the most interesting karst areas in Styria. The knowledge of the Lurgrotto goes back to the 14th century. The occasion of the publication of the special postage stamp is a particularly dramatic event exactly one hundred years ago. At that time, in 1894, seven speleologists were trapped in the Lurgrotte Semriach by floods and could only be rescued nine days later. With a length of 4.5 km, the Lurgrotte is the most extensive, accessible cave system in Austria.
