In the northern Burgenland, 50 kilometers from Vienna, east of the Leitha Mountains and the Ruster hill range lies the Neusiedlersee, an average of only 1.5 m deep steppe lake with an area of about 300 km2. The north-south extension of Lake Neusiedl measures about 36 km. The southern quarter of the lake is located on the territory of the neighboring state of Hungary. Lake Neusiedl is not only Austria's largest lake, it is also the most geographically eastern and at the same time the lowest point of the entire federal territory, since the water level is only 115 m above the level of the Adriatic Sea. East of the Neusiedlersee begins with the Seewinkel the Small Hungarian Plain. In the Seewinkel are numerous saline small lakes, the so-called Zicklacken, embedded. Many of them dry out in the summer and leave extensive salt crusts. Seewinkel and Neusiedlersee represent a geographical unit in eastern Austria, the Neusiedlerseegebiet. Especially the unique flora and fauna of this habitat make the lake an extraordinary nature experience. The Neusiedlersee and its surroundings are under protection of the landscape. The brand image shows a typical landscape of Lake Neusiedl.
