In the year 907, when many noblemen fled from the Hungarians, Heinrich von Altdorf from the family of the Welfs sought refuge with his son Konrad, the future Bishop of Constance, on the castle of Ems. During the construction of the castle on the lonely high rock man and animal were tormented by thirst. So Konrad went down into the Buchenau, drew spring water into his handkerchief and returned to the castle. But the water did not run out until Konrad had dug a pit at the height of the castle. He poured the water into it and henceforth the Konradsbrunnen flowed at this point. However, it began to dry up immediately as soon as it was contaminated by dirty laundry or similar things. The opening of the well is still visible in the former castle courtyard.
