130 years ago, in 1872, the first postal museum in the world was founded in Berlin on the initiative of General Postmaster Heinrich von Stephan in Berlin. It was initially housed in rooms of the post office. From 1893 to 1898, the predecessor of today's museum was built on Leipziger Straße / Ecke Mauerstraße with a representative building. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War, meanwhile housed the postal museum of the GDR and was reopened on March 17, 2000 as a »museum for communication«. The museum is supported by the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunications, which is financed by Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom.
