When the Austrian Postal Administration issues a special postage stamp entitled "Hiking and Mountaineering", it wants to express that Austria is predestined for hiking and climbing mountain peaks in the extreme sense. Depending on the physical constitution you can choose between a contemplative, perhaps even level walk on a mountain slope or a dashing rock tour, yes, even stride across wide, eternal ice fields. The real enjoyment, however, is reserved only for those who consciously experience nature and find there the fulfillment of the yearning for distance. The practical conditions for hiking and mountaineering are given in Austria to the highest degree. The country has a significant share of the eastern Alps, and the mighty alpine trains stretch from Lake Constance to the Danube breakthrough near Vienna. The brand image shows massive mountains with steep ridges and high walls; the climb to these heights may lead over glaciers to the peaks and down into the next valley. Also a mountain lake can be seen. This brand symbolizes clearly that Austria is the "Land of the mountains, land on the river", as proclaimed by Paula von Preradovic in the first verse of the Austrian national anthem.
