The Rappbode reservoirs influence the water balance in the area from Harz to Halle. Above all, they serve the drinking water supply of citizens in the districts of Magdeburg, Halle and Leipzig, irrigation, flood protection and energy generation. Each year, water reserves of 60 million cubic meters of drinking water for the population and 10 million cubic meters of process water for industry and agriculture are created here. The area around the dam is also a popular attraction for long hikes.
