Monuments of the Water Economy The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four multicolored special postage stamps with illustrations of monuments of the water industry. Special cancellations from January 21 to March 20, 1986 Monuments of the water industry 70 Pfennig value Roppbodetalsperre, 1959 The construction of the Rappbodetalsperre, which originated between 1952 and 1959, is one of the most significant water services in the GDR. 109 million cubic meters of water can be held back in this basin - behind a dam wall 106 meters high. The Rappbode reservoirs influence the water balance in the area from Harz to Halle. Above all, they serve the drinking water supply of citizens in the districts of Magdeburg, Halle and Leipzig, irrigation, flood protection and energy generation. Each year, water reserves of 60 million cubic meters of drinking water for the population and 10 million cubic meters of process water for industry and agriculture are created here. The area around the dam is also a popular attraction for long hikes.
