"Hospitals" were spiritual institutions in the Middle Ages. Their bearers were covenant-like communities. During the Crusades, separate hospital orders were created for the wounded and sick crusaders and pilgrims in the Middle East. Such a medal was also the Teutonic Order. The foundation of the "Brothers of the German House of St. Mary in Jerusalem" took place in 1190. The center of the order was initially in Palestine, in the city of Akkon. After the fall of Akkon (1291), the religious center was moved to Venice. Since 1805 the "German House" in Vienna has been the center of the order. The Teutonic Order Church, a beautiful building of the 14th century, impresses with its fine proportions and the harmony of the sacral space inside. Today, the Order sees itself as part of the universal Church, which wants to work hard, especially in the charitable field. "Predesse" - "useful" - is the medal of the order in which this community has been working for more than 800 years.
