In the charming area of the Innviertel in the upper Danube valley lies the only Trappist monastery in Austria. After its founding in 1923, Engelszell Abbey passed through periods of flowering and decline until a period of calm equilibrium of our days. The Trappists represent a branch of reform of the Cistercian order and were founded in the 17th century by the Frenchman Armand- Jean Le Bouthilier de Rance. His goal was to restore the Cistercian order to its original rigor and to consciously live the religious clergy, as opposed to the material orientation of the environment. This awareness is also felt by the visitor in Stift Engelszell.
