The Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg is, as excavations of the archaeologist St. Karwiese prove since 1982, on the remains of the Roman Juvavum of the 2nd to 5th centuries. The founder of the Salzburg Church, Rupert von Worms, came here around 696. As choirmaster of a west Frankish mother church (Maastricht - Tønder?) He founded the church of St. Peter and a priestly community with the purpose to reorganize the ecclesiastical relations between Ziller / Tyrol (the old border between the Roman provinces Noricum and Rätien) and the eastern border of the empire (and Bavaria). The current abbey is concerned above all with the liturgical tasks of the church, which is what the Benedictines are called to do.
