The area where the abbey is located today played an important role in the past. For the immediate vicinity of the monastery was already inhabited in the Bronze Age (about 1000 BC), as numerous finds testify. When the Romans in 15 BC. Conquest of Tyrol, began their settlement activity on this site north of the mountain Isel. On April 30, 1138, Pope Innocent II confirmed to the provost Marchwand of Wilten the takeover of the church at Wilten and its estates by the "canonical order", which was used there according to the rule of Blessed Augustine and according to the prescriptions of the Premonstratensian friars. Based on this papal confirmation, which is still preserved in its original form, the Wilten Abbey in 1988 celebrated the 850th anniversary of colonization by the Premonstratensian Order.
