In several late medieval records it is said that the monastery was about the fifth year of the death of St. Dominic was founded. Dominikus died on August 6, 1221. Thus one arrives at the year 1226 as the founding year of the Dominican monastery in Vienna. The Prince, Duke Leopold VI. the Glorious (1198 - 1230) provided the building ground. 1237 was the consecration of the new monastery. This first church was rebuilt and extended during the second half of the 13th century. In 1302, the Dominican Cardinal Nikolaus Boccasini, later Pope Benedict XI, inaugurated the newly built choir. When the Turks besieged Vienna in 1529, it became clear that the fortification on the northwest corner of the city was not the best. The church was used as a quarry to fortify the fortifications. For a long time, the Benedictine monastery led a shadowy existence. Only at the beginning of the 17th century came a new boom. With the resurgence of the Dominicans, the construction of the church building was begun. 1631 was the laying of the cornerstone for the construction of the church, 1634, the shell was completed. The design in the interior in the style of the early and early high baroque, of course, dragged on for a long time. The church was consecrated to the Rosary Queen and in 1927 by Pope Pius XI. raised to the Rosary basilica.
