Stift Rein in the district of Graz-Umgebung, 12 km from the state capital of Styria, Graz, was founded in 1129 by the Styrian Margrave Leopold the Strong from the family of the Traungauer and his wife Sophie von Bayern from the family of the Guelphs. The Reiner Gotteshaus was built according to the strict construction principles of the Cistercian style as a romantic pillar basilica after the example of Fontenay II (Burgundy) and should be preserved until 1738 in its original structure. From 1738 to 1747, the church building was redesigned in baroque style. One of the main tasks of the monastery is pastoral care. In twelve parishes and in the pilgrimage church street angel the pastoral care is exercised by Cistercian monks to about 40,000 inhabitants of the district Graz environment. But Stift Rein also tries to work in wider layers. Every art expert will find the collegiate church, which was elevated to the minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in the jubilee year of 1979, a magical attraction. Furthermore, the pen is not only a school for the youth, but also a training center for architecture students of the TU Graz. Ultimately, however, the Rein Foundation will remain primarily a place of prayer, work and silence to fulfill its religious-cultural mission.
