Peter Pongratz was born on May 22, 1940 in Eisenstadt. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Berlin before exhibiting his first drawings at the Vienna Secession in 1965. Two years later he participated in the IX. International Biennale in Tokyo and in 1968 was one of the founding members of the group "Realities". In 1977, his work was honored by the Burgenland State Prize for Fine Arts and only three years later Pongratz was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Fine Arts. Until 1990 followed a series of solo exhibitions and exhibition participations.
