The young Zeppel-Sperl came from Styria to the Vienna Academy in the early sixties. At that time, the "Vienna School of Fantastic Realism" was one of the defining art movements in Austria. The artist developed his very own style in a critical examination of this influence and by dealing with other trends. His first major exhibition in the memorable year of 1968 was a joint exhibition of artists. This exhibition entitled "Realities" is often referred to by critics as the emergence of a new generation at the time, and can in some ways be seen as an anticipation of the "Transvandguardia" emerging in Italy only in the seventies.
