The federal state of Carinthia celebrated in 1980 the sixtieth anniversary of the Carinthian referendum and the fiftieth anniversary of the town twinning Klagenfurt-Wiesbaden. For this reason, a Carinthian was selected for the design of this special stamp of the series "Modern Art". Karl Brandstätter was born in 1946 in Lautz, a village near Villach. His drawing talent showed early, at least in high school matured the decision to become an artist. The visit of the graphics class Jonny Friedlaenders in the Salzburg Summer Academy (1965/66) had a decisive significance for Brandstätter's development. Because this internationally known artist opened his way to Paris. In Friedlaender's studio in Paris, which he ran for two years, he expanded and tested the sophisticated technical means of expression, above all, color etching. He stayed in Paris for almost ten years. Solo exhibitions in his native Carinthia and in the rest of Austria from 1970, in the following years also abroad, made him known to experts and collectors. Today he lives in an old farmhouse in Carinthia, in the village of Saager. The brand motif shows the work "Moon Figurine" by Karl Brandstätter.
