VIII World Cup in men's indoor handball in 1974 in the GDR For the VIII World Cup in men's indoor handball in 1974 in the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued three multi-color special postage stamps. VIII World Championships in Men's Indoor Handball 1974 The VIII World Championships in men's indoor handball has been transferred to the German Handball Association of the GDR (DHV of the GDR) by the International Handball Federation (IHF) for implementation. In 1958, the GDR was already for the hosting of the III. World Championship (WM) ausersehen. Once again, this transmission is considered a vote of confidence and at the same time an obligation to make a contribution to the further development of international handball. The VIll. World Cup will be held from February 28th to March 10th, 1974 in 11 cities of our republic. It is divided into main and secondary venues: Berlin with Brandenburg, Karl Marx City with Erfurt and Gera, Schwerin with Rostock and Wismar, Halle with Magdeburg and Dessau. 16 teams take up the fight for the title of world champion. Eight teams had already qualified at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the following order: SFR Yugoslavia (Olympic champion), CSSR, Socialist Republic of Romania, GDR, USSR, FRG / WB, Sweden and the Hungarian People's Republic. The other eight participants were determined by qualifying matches or tournaments until 19 December 1973: Denmark (from European Group I), Iceland (from European Group II), People's Republic of Bulgaria (from European Group III), People's Republic of Poland (from European Group IV), Spain (from Europe group V), USA (from America group), Algeria (from Africa group). The representative of the Asian group will be determined only ten days before the start of the World Cup. In total, 34 national teams applied for the total of 54 countries represented in the IHF. This number of participants means attendance record, indicating that the indoor handball game is gaining popularity in the world. For this development was also crucial that indoor handball was included in the Olympic program. In our republic, the sport handball ranked behind football, gymnastics, fishing, athletics and bowling in sixth place within the 36 sports federations. If one is asked about the most important international successes of the DHV of the GDR in its development, one must first of all refer to three years: In 1963, the GDR national team became world champion on the large field, in 1970 she earned second place in the VIl. Indoor Handball World Cup in France, and 1971 brought the GDR handball women from Holland the world title with. 130,000 citizens of our republic play handball, that is about 10,000 teams. Diverse is the competition system. There are game classes for everyone, from the county classes for all ages to the top league for women and men. Folk sports tournaments, factory championships, championships for school teams and the Spartakiads for the children and young people determine the competitive sport. A team consists of twelve players (ten field players and two goalkeepers). At the same time, however, a maximum of seven players (six outfield players and one goalkeeper) may be on the field. The remaining five players are substitutes and can be used at any time. The German Post of the GDR has already issued a stamp with a handball motif for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Now appears for the VIII World Cup a triplet. Interesting here is the fact that not only an attacking player is shown - this is the case with all stamps published in the world with handball motifs - but also the cover players and the goalkeeper as game designers are highlighted.
