The listed lighthouse »Neuland« is located to the east of Kiel, near the municipality of Behrensdorf on the Hohwacht bay. After two years of construction, completed in 1916, it was put into operation after the end of the First World War. From 1918 to 1996, the octagonal 44 meter high tower of shipping halfway between Fehmarn and Kiel served as orientation fire. He warned about shoals, ie shallow areas, in the Hohwacht bay. Until 1982, the beacon was cared for by lighthouse keeper. In 1982, as part of a basic renovation, the original red-and-white paint was removed and the bricks were laid free, so that the lighthouse now appears in the red-brown brick look typical of the Baltic Sea. Since 1996, "new territory" is no longer in regular operation. He warns, however, by red and yellow light signals when the military zones of the Hohwacht Bay are blocked due to firing exercises of the Bundeswehr. The old light source of the tower is exhibited in the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Lübeck. The lighthouse "Flügge" on the island of Fehmarn was built at the same time as virgin soil and differs only in its red and white façade.
