The lighthouse Westerheversand is probably the most famous lighthouse on the Schleswig-Holstein coast. During numerous storm surges he defied the natural forces with the two houses like a small island in the raging sea. In the difficult area with the strongly changing sands south of Amrum and north of the Eider, the Heverstrom towards Husum was to be marked at the beginning of the 20th century with the erection of a powerful beacon in the North Sea. The beacon was commissioned in 1908 with a carbon arc lamp as the light source. The necessary energy was supplied by batteries charged by diesel generators. 1951 followed the connection to the public power grid. Since 1978, the beacon works with the help of an automatic control. It is, like all fires on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, monitored by the Tönning telecontrol center. Therefore, no lighthouse keeper works on Westerheversand today. For some time now wedding couples have been able to vote in specially decorated rooms at lofty heights.
