In the northwest of the Austrian province of Carinthia, in the Upper Mölltal, lies the high mountain valley Asten. Many high mountain peaks of the Sadnig group surround this valley like a horseshoe. The valley flows through the Astenbach. In its upper course, a flat moor, the so-called Astner moss, a natural monument, has formed. Then the brook digs deeper and deeper into the soil, past the actual town of Asten, and then, through a barren gorge, foaming and bubbling into the Möll. The Astental can be reached via an asphalted road of 7 km length that branches off from Mörtschach to the village of Asten. From there, the road continues to the Sadnigghaus (shelter of the Austrian Alpine Club) and into the hiking area Asten. The village of Asten is one of the most beautiful closed settlements in Carinthia. Asten belongs to the municipality of the market town of Winklern and thus the upstream of the Hohe Tauern National Park region. The brand image shows the village of Asten with a view towards the Lienz Dolomites.
