The Weißseegebiet lies in the highest, eastern part of the Stubach valley (Pinzgau country Salzburg) against the backdrop of the three thousand and almost three thousand meter peaks of the Tauernkamm. In the series of the Salzburg Tauern valleys, those 12 transverse valleys from the Krimmler- to the Großarl-Achental, the Stubachtal is the sixth. The "dusting Ache" (Stup-ach), which flows through the valley, once gave name, was meanwhile tamed by power plant buildings, but the valley is still considered the most beautiful among the Tauern valleys. Above all, the 10 glaciers of the valley contribute to this. The distinct step construction of the valley has allowed the installation of an upgradable power plant system. The power plants Enzinger Boden, Schneiderau and Uttendorf were built in three sections from 1921 to 1950. Since the Stubach - Weißsee cable car has existed, the area has become a popular excursion destination. Before, it was an insider tip for tourers and mountaineers. The valley is today one of the most visited Tauern valleys due to the construction of reservoirs as "sights" and the good traffic development.
