The city of Enns is located in the middle of ancient settlement grounds. Due to its location, this place has always been a traffic hub and gate on the line from east to west along the Danube. The city of Enns leads its name back to the river Enns. The Celtic Anisa became the Roman Anisus, from which finally Enisa, Ensi, Enss and Enns emerged. In this area, the Celts already settled in a closed village, after the Roman rule, 488 AD, followed in the 5th century by the conquest by the Bavarians. In 1192 Enns became babenbergisch and thus Austrian. The Babenberger Duke Leopold VI. granted the Ennser citizenship on 22 April 1212 the city law. Already in the 12th century Enns was included in the long-distance trade network, and the 1191 of the last Styrian Otakar issued market order reveals that there were Ennser fairs, the merchants from Regensburg, Cologne and Aachen, and even from Holland led here.
