The Bischofsmütze with its two peaks, which can be seen on the stamp, is one of the most interesting and striking rock formations not only of the Dachstein massif, but also of the Northern Limestone Alps. In this Salzburg mountain group, the peculiarities and beauties of the limestone formations unite with those of the glacier world. Powerful mountain giants face bold, filigree towers and battlements. This high region is surrounded by the romantic lake landscape of the Salzkammergut in the north and by the quiet forest and alpine pastures in the south. This change of appearance leads to a harmonious overall picture, which exerts a unique attraction on the visitor. The name "Bischofsmütze" for this twin-towered mountain might not be that old, because at the beginning of the last century the names "Kantenbrunnerspitz" or "Schweigersspitze" were still in use. However, when the "Great Bishop's Hat" (2455 meters) was defeated for the first time on June 28, 1879, it already bore the present name. The Bischofsmütze is not one of the great mountains of the Eastern Alps, there are far higher and more powerful in their area. But because of its shape with the two horns protruding against the sky, of which the higher carries a summit cross visible from afar, it is one of the most striking and beautiful peaks in Austria.
