The special postage stamp series »Land parliaments in Germany« continues the series of contemporary topics. With a view to the 50th anniversary, the public should be made more aware of the young and recent history and the federal structure of the Federal Republic of Germany. The magnificent building of the Hamburg City Hall has 647 rooms and six more than London's Buckingham Palace. It is since the inauguration in the year 1897 seat of citizenry and senate of the free and Hanseatic city Hamburg. The building, which is to be assigned to the style of historicism, combines with two winged townhall and stock exchange: According to the will of the city fathers, this immediate neighborhood should at the same time symbolize the fundamental agreement between merchants and political leaders in the questions that are fundamental to the city. Since 1995, the entire structure has been fundamentally restored. The Hamburg citizenship as a whole of all 121 elected members is the direct political representation of the citizens. According to the state constitution, Hamburg is a unified community, which means that the citizenship is at the same time the provincial paul and municipal representative. Until 1996, citizenship was a pure "after-work parliament". The deputies were volunteers and usually went to work. A constitutional and parliamentary reform passed in 1996 seeks to make the Parliament more professional without, in principle, restricting the possibility of practicing the profession.
