The United Nations declared 1994 the International Year of the Family. Their call is addressed both to the governments of the Member States and to the non-governmental organizations. Under the motto "The Family: Resources and Tasks in a Changing World", activities and measures will be carried out at local, regional and national level, which should help to increase the awareness of the importance of the family worldwide and in the Federal Republic of Germany. The family is the nucleus of every society. For the children, it is a place of security and protection, for elderly and disabled relatives a place of solidarity and support. After all, the family is the place for a lived partnership between women and men. Values and behavioral norms are developed and lived in the family that go far beyond mere survival and livelihood. Despite the undisputed importance of the family, families face economic, social and societal challenges in their day to day lives that they can only manage if they receive protection and support. For this the International Year of the Family 1994 should make a contribution. The aim of the International Year of the Family in the Federal Republic of Germany and the measures, activities and initiatives that have been implemented nationwide this year is - to improve the level of knowledge about the services provided by families, - to raise awareness of the concerns of families in the old and new federal states - greater transparency in the structures of family work at local, regional and national level and - deepening of international cooperation in the field of family policy. We need majorities in our country for the interests of families. Preparations for the International Year of the Family have involved family associations and organizations, the Free Welfare Associations, the collective bargaining parties, academics, the media, the churches, the federal government, the federal states, and local umbrella organizations. They sponsor events, exhibitions and action days, symposia and seminars, they organize family encounters - in short, they make public for the important concerns of families in our society. The main topics of the International Year of the Family range from the economic situation of families to new solutions for the reconciliation of work and family life, the housing situation of families and the immediate social and cultural environment of families.
